The year 2020 marked the 100th anniversary of women obtaining the right to vote in United States elections. The 19th Amendment to the US constitution was ratified on August 18, 1920, but much of the work within the women’s suffrage movement happened during the century before. In honor of this monumental anniversary, I have created some pieces of jewelry inspired by the amazing women who pushed for gender equality through the decades. This is a project close to my heart, and one that I plan to add to over time.

The Sojourner Necklace:

Sojourner Truth, who bestowed this name upon herself, was an African American abolitionist and women’s rights activist. She was born into slavery in New York, but escaped in 1826 with her infant daughter. She later also reunited with her son, who had been sold to slavery in Alabama, after a legal battle. Truth became the first black woman to win a lawsuit of this nature against a white man.

Sojourner was perhaps most famous for the speech she made in 1851 in Ohio, later referred to as, "Ain't I a Woman?". In this speech she said, “That little man in black there, he says women can't have as much rights as men, 'cause Christ wasn't a woman! Where did your Christ come from? Where did your Christ come from? From God and a woman! Man had nothing to do with Him. If the first woman God ever made was strong enough to turn the world upside down all alone, these women together ought to be able to turn it back , and get it right side up again! And now they is asking to do it, the men better let them.“

This necklace is my tribute to Sojourner Truth and the bold warrior-work that she did whilst on this earth. This vintage-style piece is both earthy and strong. It features bronze chain and accents, with a mix of black onyx and black glass beads, highlighting some gorgeous auburn-toned marbled antique glass beads. The focal piece of this necklace is a bronze flower with a black bead in its center, and a lovely chained dropdown bead.

The necklace length measures approximately 17 inches long, with a 3-inch extender chain. The pendant/dropdown piece measures approximately 2 inches long. Alternate sizing may be available upon request (please message me).
