Die Hexe

€70.00

**Made to Order**

Die Hexe is German for "The Witch". I am inspired to create witchy necklaces for each country I visit. This piece evokes the darker, yet also colorful notions of witches in German lore.

The dictionary defines a witch as, "a woman thought to have magic powers, especially evil ones, popularly depicted as wearing a black cloak and pointed hat and flying on a broomstick". Germany in particular has a complex relationship to the icon of the witch, with both the horrific history of witch hunts and the celebration of fairy tale culture. While in the past, the witch was meant to be feared, today the symbol of the witch in German culture is a bit more light-hearted, fun, almost kitschy, and can even represent good fortune. In Germany, the festival Walpurgisnacht (or Walpurgis Night) is celebrated each year on the eve of May Day. This ritual dates back to pre-Christian times and was originally meant to ward off evil. In modern times, it appears to be a celebration of witches, with broomsticks, conical hats, fire dancing, and bubbling cauldrons. This festival fully embraces and celebrates the more traditional witch imagery.

I created this necklace to celebrate the German witch, or Die Hexe. This piece features fire-polished glass beads in dark purples and blues, complemented by silver-toned chains and a lovely drop down focal piece with a tear-shaped purple glass bead. Four strands in total, this piece is whimsical, with a touch of darkness. The perfect accessory for your Walpurgisnacht outfit, or for any witchy occasion.

The necklace measures approximately 18 inches at its longest point, and is adjustable shorter. Alternate lengths may be available for an additional charge (message me with your needs). It closes with a lobster clasp.
