This is the season in which we bring light into the darkness. Whether you are lighting Hanukkah candles, stringing twinkle lights around your Christmas tree, or stoking the Yule Log, the goal is the same for all of us. We find our way through these long dark nights and short days by creating our own light; our own magic. Consequently, this season has become one of the most magical times of year for so many folks. We get to embrace cosiness, curl up under fuzzy blankets, enjoy hot drinks, great food, family, friends, gift-giving, and general merriment. The origins of the Christmas tree are said to lie within the pagan solstice rituals, as a way of bringing both light and life into the home; a way of getting through the dark season. I interpret this as a spell to encourage the triumph of light over darkness, life over death, and abundance over scarcity. The Christmas tree tradition, as we know it today, is said to originate in Germany during the middle ages! It’s no wonder I love the Munich Mittelaltermarkt so much. This time of year always reminds me of one of my favorite quotes by singer, Dar Williams, from her 90s song, The Christians and the Pagans. “You find magic from your God, and we find magic everywhere…”
