Blessed Belated Beltane, Magical Folk…I am writing to you a bit later in the month than usual, as it’s been a busy time! A few weeks ago, I took a truly magical trip up to the Harz Mountains in Germany, about 6 hours north of where I live. There is a festival, called Walpurgisnacht, that has been celebrated in the Harz region for well over 1000 years!. It takes place on April 30th, the night before Beltane, and is basically a huge celebration of witches! Similar to the vibe of Salem, Massachusetts, this region takes what began as a fear and persecution of witches and turned it around to be a big celebration of them. I was in heaven. We stayed in an idyllic medieval fairytale town called Goslar, and visited several other ancient villages in the region, partaking in witchy festivities, hiking, and general merriment. The night of Walpurgis, we attended the Schierke festival, which was the most medieval and authentic of them all. And while the vegan food was sorely lacking, we partook in the medieval marketplace, archery, axe throwing, and of course, a huge bonfire. Pics above and below!
